Minister Joe O’Brien announces funding for Balbriggan project to mark decade for people of African descent
The Irish Institute of Music and Song in Balbriggan will receive a grant of €5,000.
€169,740 will be made available for projects to host events to mark and celebrate the International Decade for People of African Descent.
Grants of up to €5,000 will be allocated to successful organisations.
The Minister of State for Community Development, Integration and Charities, Joe O’Brien, has announced the 35 projects set to receive funding under the International Decade for People of African Descent Funding Call including one project in Fingal. Through this Fund, a total of €169,740 will be made available to support organisations hosting events to mark the International Decade for People of African Descent and celebrate the diverse culture and heritage of people of African descent.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister O’Brien said:
“This broad range of events will engage and help enlighten communities across the country about the Decade and its importance. It will help to animate the richness of Irish society that is often not fully appreciated but also give a platform to voices that don’t always get space and time to express themselves.
I had the pleasure of celebrating Africa Day 2023 at an event held by the Irish Institute of Music and Song in Balbriggan. I am delighted that they have been awarded €5,000 to support their plans to mark the International Decade for People of African Descent.”
The UN General Assembly proclaimed an ‘International Decade for People of African Descent’, effective through 2015-2024 under resolution 68/237. The resolution proclaims a need to strengthen national, regional and international cooperation in order to encourage the full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by People of African Descent. The theme of the Decade is “People of African descent: recognition, justice and development”
The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth grant funds the International Decade for People of African Descent Ireland (IDPADI) Steering Committee to advance the celebration of the Decade.
The IDPAD open call for proposals ran from 25th May 2023 to 20th July 2023.
