Minister O’Brien launches short film and resource on young people in Direct Provision
26th August, 2022
I was privileged to attend and speak at the inaugural screening of Youth Work Ireland’s “Waiting,Waiting, Waiting” – Stories Of Direct Provision” held in the IFI this week. The testimony from young people present and in the movie is harrowing. I reaffirmed mine and the Government’s determination to end Direct Provision.
I commend all involved and the youth workers from Youth Work Ireland’s Member Youth Services who have been working to support young refugees for many years. Their tireless struggle notwithstanding the challenges is ensuring that young people feel included and valued in their new communities.
We need to constantly help those facing discrimination and inequality and this short film “Waiting, Waiting, Waiting” was a stark reminder of the lived experiences of those living in Direct Provision.
I was delighted to launch the film along with Pamela Uba and to confirm our commitment to ending Direct Provision.
