Minister Joe O’Brien welcomes announcement of €3.2 million Boost to Swimming Pool Operators

31st March, 2022

Minister Joe O’Brien has welcomed the announcement by Sport Ireland and Ireland Active of a €3.2 million funding package for swimming pool operators across the country.  Included in this is €43,256 for swimming pool operators locally in Fingal.  This funding forms part of the €73.6m in Covid funding to support the sport sector announced by Government last December.

The funding allocation is an acknowledgement of the importance of the sector and the impact swimming has on the nation’s health.  Ireland Active was appointed by Sport Ireland to administer the swimming pool grant scheme, supported by partners Swim Ireland.

Speaking about the announcement, Minister Joe O’Brien said:

The past two years have been an extremely difficult period for swimming pool operators across the country with facilities having had to close their doors for long periods of that time.  The funding announced by Sport Ireland and Ireland Active will help provide financial stability to this important sector especially now as they face rising energy costs.

Swimming Pools across Dublin Fingal to receive funding include Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Club – €11,284.28,  Gym Plus Swords – €11,872.00,  Arena Health & Fitness Club (Malahide) – €12,929.90 and Roganstown Leisure Club – €7,170.22.

Swimming Pool operators are vital in communities everywhere and an essential amenity for our physical and mental well-being.  Operators have demonstrated their resilience throughout the pandemic. The funding announced today will assist them to continue getting communities across the country active and providing a real-life skill.”

Swimming pools provide a vital resource for schools, clubs and communities across the country, and it is important that this infrastructure is maintained going forward. This investment will help swimming pool operators continue to provide a safe and essential service to sustain swimming and maintain high physical activity levels.
