Minister Joe O’Brien welcomes €16.6m provided for Sports Equipment under the Sports Capital & Equipment Programme

6th August, 2021

Minister Joe O’Brien has welcomed the announcement €16.6 million in equipment grants under the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP).

Commenting on the announcement, Minister O’Brien said:

“I am delighted that many sports organisations in Fingal have been successful in their applications for funding and I wish to congratulate all of the successful applicants.  Sports in Fingal to benefit include tennis, sailing, rowing, hockey, basketball, football and more.  Sports Capital and Equipment funding is another example of Government helping sporting communities by supporting clubs and organisations to provide the facilities necessary to achieve our objectives of increased participation in sport.  Sport and physical activity have a huge positive benefit on our physical and mental wellbeing, particularly in these challenging times.

“I also wish to commend all of the hard-working volunteers who made the applications. Without so many volunteers, sporting organisations could not operate to serve our communities.  Under this year’s programme, funding is being allocated to the clubs, schools and organisations which are striving to serve all of the community and especially those groups where there are traditionally lower participation levels. There is also a particular focus on promoting and growing female participation levels across our sports.

Some of the successful organisations in Fingal:

  • Corrstown Golf Club – €30,000
  • Donabate Portrane Tennis Club – €23,280
  • Fingal Rowing Club – €29,851
  • Lusk Utd AFC – €25,453
  • Malahide Cricket Club – €9,770

  • Rush Fight Academy – €24,257
  • Skerries Hockey Club – €47,500
  • Skerries Sailing Club – €12,500

The 2020 round of the Sports Capital & Equipment Programme closed for applications on Monday 1st March last.  By that deadline, a record number of over 3,100 applications were submitted seeking a total of €200m in funding.  The equipment-only applications have been assessed first and it is the successful applicants under this element of the scheme that are being announced today.  €16.6mm has been allocated.  The top 95% of local applications by score have been awarded a grant. The individual grant allocations were calculated considering the amount available for that particular county (based on a per capita distribution and the demand levels for that county), the amount sought for the project and the score obtained following assessment.

Full details of all allocations announced today are set out on the Department’s website at https://www.gov.ie/en/collection/471ed5-sports-capital-allocations/
