“FINGAL’S newest TD got straight down to work on his first day in Leinster House last week where he made some Green waves, voting no confidence in the Housing Minsiter and challenged the Taoiseach on how Ireland deals with racism.
On his first day in the Dail, Deputy Joe O’brien (GP) voted no confidence in the Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy and told reporters that he could think of ‘no better reason’ for a General Election than the housing crisis.
After being welcomed to the Dáil by party leaders, including An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, TD, Fingal’s newly-elected TD, Joe O’brien made his maiden speech.
“It is somewhat fitting that as I stand on my first day in Dáil Éireann, the Irish Government is being questioned by the United Nations.”
He said: ‘I made a very conscious decision about 20 years ago to dedicate my life’s work to the area of human rights.
‘It was a time when immigration was new to Ireland and I was determined to work to help ensure that as a society we would treat people new to our shores in a proper way and that we would recognise the huge richness and value they bring.’
He said: ‘‘It is somewhat fitting that as I stand on my first day in Dáil Éireann, the Irish Government is being questioned by the United Nations in Geneva as we speak on its record in upholding its commitments under the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination.’
